HTTP vs SOCKS5: which should you use?

A practical comparison of NoxProxy protocols, authentication methods and the connection details your tools need.

The quick choice

Start with the protocol your tool accepts and the details shown in your dashboard. Injection plans use HTTP. For username/password plans, choose HTTP or SOCKS5 when your selected server supports it.

NoxProxy protocols and authentication types
OptionWhen to use itConnection details
HTTP + username/passwordWeb requests and tools that accept an HTTP proxyHost, HTTP port, username and password
SOCKS5 + username/passwordSOCKS5-compatible apps, when your selected server supports itHost, SOCKS5 port, username and password
HTTP + IP authorizationInjection plans after authorizing the client's public IPHost and HTTP port; no username or password

Authentication is separate from protocol

The protocol determines how your program connects to the proxy. Authentication determines who can use it. With username/password plans, copy the credentials from your dashboard. With Injection plans, authorize the public IP of the network your program connects from.

If you switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data or your network's public IP changes, an Injection plan may need its authorized IP updated. Do not add username/password credentials to these plans or select SOCKS5.

What encrypts the connection?

HTTP and SOCKS5 do not automatically encrypt proxy authentication. An HTTPS destination uses TLS to protect that application connection; this is separate from an encrypted connection to the proxy server. Do not change the proxy URL to https just because the destination is an HTTPS website.

Encrypted proxy profiles on your phone protect saved local data. They do not turn an HTTP or SOCKS5 connection into an encrypted transport. Use the actual connection details and keep HTTPS certificate verification enabled in your client.

Check your setup

  1. Check that the proxy is active and the plan has not expired.
  2. Match the host, port and protocol to the dashboard; the HTTP and SOCKS5 ports may differ.
  3. Enter the correct credentials or authorized IP for the plan's authentication type.
  4. Make one request to an IP-check service and inspect the result before running your normal workload.

Common questions

Does SOCKS5 mean a new IP for every request?

No. The protocol does not determine exit-IP rotation. NoxProxy provides dashboard actions to change server or location when alternatives are available.

Does the Android app include a free proxy?

No. NoxProxy Connect is a separate client for a proxy you supply. The NoxProxy free trial is a separate offer with dashboard eligibility requirements.

Why do I get a 407 error or timeout?

Start with authentication type, plan validity and port. A 407 response requests proxy authentication; check the credentials or authorized IP. For a timeout, check network connectivity and the selected protocol before retrying.
